What are Mandated GHG Reporting Requirements?

Companies that are high emitters, engage in specific activities, or use specific substances must report their air, land, and water emissions to the government. Below are a list of federal programs that you may be required to report under.

The Federal Output-Based Pricing System (OBPS)

Companies are required to submit reporting to the OBPS if they satisfy the following criteria:

• Facilities that emit more than 50,000 tonnes of CO₂e per year

• Facilities that emit over 10,000 tCO2e in regulated sectors can opt-in to the OBPS at any time.

The Federal National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI)

Companies that own or operate facilities must report to the NPRI if they satisfy the following criteria:

• Employees and contractors work more than 20,000 hours during a year (about 10 full-time workers) AND/OR

• If the following activities take place at any facility:

• AND facility manufacture, process, otherwise use, or release, one or more of the NPRI substances and is the quantity above the threshold for that substance (https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/national-pollutant-release-inventory/substances-list/threshold.html)

Ontario’s Emission Performance Standards (EPS)

Companies that own or operate facilities that satisfy the following criteria are deemed “EPS Facilities” and must be registered:

• Reported 50,000 tonnes of CO2e emitted in one or more reporting years since 2014

• If the following activities are the primary function at the facility:
