1. Setting your Footprint Timeline and reporting period
Footprint timelines are a baseline that we will use to compare your future data and reduction goals against. We require at least 1 year to create a carbon footprint, but recommend 3 years to help you understand trends and create more achievable goals. Baseline years should represent a typical operating year. Read more about baseline years here.
2. Add your team
Go to "My Company" -> Employees section and import all of your employees or click add employee to add just one
3. Add a location
Go to Data -> Locations -> Create new
Enter a nickname if you have one for your office (e.g you call this office the “Headquarters” but the address is 33 Front Street East)
Add your office address
Add your office move in dates
If it’s a historical office, add in your move out dates
Select if it is a company owned building
Adding your energy usage
Select the energy types this location uses (If you’re not sure what energy your offices uses read select "I don't know"
If you know all the energy types your location uses:
Select the energy types from the list
Select if you have access to billing (If you have access utility bills or can retrieve the amount of energy you use select yes).
Select if your energy is separately metered (If your utility provider is measuring usage for your business separately then select yes).
If your office energy is not separately metered you will have to enter the building square footage and your office’s square footage.
Once you have added all of your office details, the emission sources will be created, you can see them when you are on the location overview and go into each one to add your data.
4. Business Travel
You can add business travel two ways in the platform
Adding 1 item at a time
Data -> Data imports -> add item
Bulk imports
Data -> Data imports -> "New Import"
5. Custom Sources
Custom sources are used in carbon accounting to ensure accuracy and completeness in tracking an organization's greenhouse gas emissions. They allow you to add specific emissions sources or data that may not be included in the default emissions calculation method. This way, you can have a more comprehensive view of your emissions and identify areas for improvement in reducing your carbon footprint. Read more about how to import data into custom sources here
6. Targets
Go to my company -> Targets -> Add new target and complete your first target!
Absolute targets are simple and easy to follow as they look at total emissions
Intensity targets are great for growing companies to see how efficiently they are growing from an emissions point of view (i.e. emissions per employee) and comparisons against peers.
