When importing data, it is important that you've got the formatting, file type, and data correct. Here are some easy steps you can take to simplify the import process as well as troubleshooting for some common problems.

Data Import Types

There are a few different types of data imports that you will see within the app, the reason there are different types is because the data structure varies from one emission source to another.

If you are ever unsure what is required for your import you can always download the template to double check you have formatted it correctly.

Energy Data Import

Energy Data imports require 5 columns to be completed:

  • Energy Type (Electricity, Natural Gas, Diesel, Propane Gas, Heavy Gas Oils)

  • From Date (mm/dd/yyyy)

  • To Date (mm/dd/yyyy)

  • Energy Usage

  • Energy Unit (KWH, BTU, GJ, MJ, MWH, M3 (NATURAL GAS), MMBTU)

If the column titles aren't formatted this way your upload will be unsuccessful. To make it easier we have attached a template within each modal that you can utilize.

Business Travel Import

Business travel has two different types of uploads within it, the reason for this is that flights require a class in order for them to be processed (different classes use different emission factors!)

Business Travel Flight Required Fields:

  • Traveller Email (This must be a user who has been added to your account)

  • Travel Departure

  • Departure Airport Code

    • Alternatively, if you choose to enter your data by total distance you can select a total distance import type and enter the total distanced travelled during the trip)

  • Destination Airport Code

  • Travel Class (First, Business, Economy)

  • Round Trip?

Business Travel Other Required Fields(Train, Bus, Motorbike, Car):

  • Traveller Email

  • Travel Type (Car, Motorbike, Bus, Train)

  • Travel Date (mm/dd/yyyy)

  • Total Distance

    • If you would like to enter your trip by Start Address and End Address you can select To/From Address as your template during the first step of the data importer.

  • Distance Unit (km, mi)

  • Round Trip? (yes, no)

If the column titles aren't formatted this way your upload will be unsuccessful. To make it easier we have attached a template within each modal that you can utilize.

Custom Source Import

Custom sources have specific templates depending if you have created it to require a date range or not.

Custom Source Requirements (no range)

  • Date (mm/dd/yyyy)

  • Activity

  • Unit (KWH, KM, etc.)

Custom Source Requirements (range)

  • Start Date (mm/dd/yyyy)

  • End Date (mm/dd/yyyy)

  • Activity

  • Unit (KWH, KM, etc.)

To/From Address Data Imports

If your source has data that has been saved as a start address and end address you can select the to/from template within the first step of the importer. The source you want to upload against must have a distance emission factor to be able to enter data as to/from.

Common Errors

Template Mismatching

Often times the most common error is that they template you have uploaded doesn't match what the system is expecting, resulting in it being unable to process your data. To troubleshoot this you can always double check that you are using the right template by downloading it and entering your data that way.

Missing Lines

If you are missing data points (all columns are required) you will have to complete them in the missing data step

Empty Lines

Sometimes you will see errors if there are many empty lines.

Your browser needs an update

Very rarely it can happen that your browser has a new updated version and needs to be restarted. When this happens your "Upload" button will not trigger the file selector and you will not be able to drop files into the Carbonhound Data Import modal. Here is how you check for software updates for your browser:

Deleting a Data Import

Once your data import has been processed you can delete it at any point. The delete for data imports exists on the data import details, that you can access by clicking into the data line item and clicking the delete button.

This will remove all of the data associated with that data import.
